  • 1 teaspoon finely ground cardamom Freshly ground is best.
  • 1/2 cup butter Softened, can use margarine for dairy-free.
For the Filling
  • 1 cup chocolate chips Dark chocolate enhances flavor.

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Warm 1 cup of milk to about 20°C (lukewarm). Stir in crumbled fresh yeast until dissolved.
  2. In a bowl, mix 4 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cardamom. Pour in milk-yeast mixture and mix with an electric mixer on medium for 10 minutes.
  3. Gradually blend in 1/2 cup of softened butter, then fold in 1 cup of chocolate chips.
  4. Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rise in a warm area for 1.5 hours or until doubled.
  5. Punch down dough, divide into 9 portions, shape into balls, and proof for 45 minutes on a lined baking sheet.
  6. Preheat oven to 225°C (440°F) and brush tops with 3 tablespoons of milk or an egg wash.
  7. Bake rolls for around 12 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.
