Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 2 cups Mashed Potatoes Cooled leftovers for best texture and flavor.
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour if needed.
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt Essential for flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (Melted) Adds richness; substitute with oil for a dairy-free alternative.
Optional Toppings
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Classic addition that melts beautifully.
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped Fresh Herbs (Chives or Parsley) For added flavor.
  • 4 ounces Smoked Salmon Pairs perfectly with farls.
  • 4 ounces Jam or Cream Cheese Sweet toppings for contrast.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • non-stick skillet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine mashed potatoes, flour, and salt. Add melted butter. Stir until a soft dough forms, about 3–5 minutes.
  2. Lightly flour your work surface and turn out the dough. Knead gently for 1–2 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Roll the dough into a circle about ¼ inch thick. Dust with flour if sticking.
  4. Cut the rolled dough into quarters to form triangle-shaped farls.
  5. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. No oil needed because of the butter in the dough.
  6. Cook each farl for 3–4 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip.
  7. Cook the other side for another 3–4 minutes until crispy. Serve warm with toppings.
