Step-by-Step Instructions for Ground Turkey Sloppy Joes
- In a large skillet, heat over medium-high heat and add 1 pound of ground turkey. Cook for 6-8 minutes, breaking it apart as it browns. You'll know it’s ready when there’s no pink remaining and the turkey is crumbled and cooked through.
- Next, add 1 diced yellow onion and 1 diced green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for 4-5 minutes until the vegetables are softened and have a glossy sheen.
- After the turkey and veggies are cooked, carefully drain any excess grease from the skillet to keep your sloppy joes healthy.
- Now, stir in the sauce ingredients: add 1 cup of tomato sauce, 1/2 cup of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard, 1 tablespoon of chili powder, and 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and allow to simmer uncovered for 6-8 minutes.
- As the sauce thickens, add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. You can also sprinkle in optional spices like onion powder and paprika.
- Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, serve the turkey mixture on soft hamburger buns while hot.
