Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat, add onions, and cook for 30-40 minutes until golden and caramelized.
  2. Boil salted water and cook elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente, about 7-9 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. Combine milk and cream in a separate pot over medium heat, whisk in the cheeses gradually until smooth and bubbling.
  4. Fold cooked macaroni into cheese sauce, add caramelized onions, and stir to coat.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer mixture to a greased baking dish, sprinkle breadcrumbs and extra cheese on top.
