Method
 

Dough Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast. Pour in the warm milk and warm water, followed by the vegetable oil and one egg. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Rising the Dough
  1. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm location for about 1 hour until it doubles in size.
Filling Preparation
  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt butter. Sauté the onion (and mushrooms, if using) for 5-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the ground beef and cook until browned.
Rolling and Cutting Dough
  1. Lightly flour a surface and roll the dough to ¼-inch thickness. Cut into 12 equal squares.
Assembling Piroshki
  1. Place a spoonful of the beef filling in the center of each square, fold over, and pinch edges firmly to seal.
Baking Piroshki
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the piroshki with the egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Cooling and Serving
  1. Let the piroshki cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.
