Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together ½ cup softened butter with ½ cup granulated sugar and ¼ cup brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Beat in 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2.5 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and ½ teaspoon of salt. Incorporate into the wet mixture.
  5. Press the remaining dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  6. Whisk together ½ cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon cardamom. Stir in 2 tablespoons melted butter and spread this over the pressed dough base.
  7. Drop small dollops of reserved dough over the filling and lightly swirl with a knife.
  8. Bake for 28-32 minutes until edges are golden brown and center is slightly soft and glossy. Allow cooling completely in the pan.
  9. Beat together 4 ounces of cream cheese and ¼ cup softened butter. Gradually mix in 1 cup powdered sugar, adding milk to reach desired spreadability.
  10. Spread the cream cheese frosting over the cooled bars and chill for 30 minutes before slicing.
