Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a large pot over medium heat for about 1–2 minutes.
  2. Add 1 diced onion to the pot and sauté for approximately 5 minutes until translucent.
  3. Add 3 cloves of minced garlic to the pot and stir for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in 28 ounces of crushed tomatoes and stir to combine. Season with 1 teaspoon of dried oregano and dried basil, with salt and pepper to taste. If using, sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of sugar.
  5. Bring to a gentle simmer, reduce heat to low, and cook uncovered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Check the sauce’s consistency. If too thick, add a splash of water and adjust seasoning as needed.
  7. Serve by tossing cooked spaghetti in the sauce or ladling sauce over pasta. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
